We allow our British White cattle and Tamworth pigs to act as "ecosystem engineers." Their natural behaviours - from the cattle's non-selective grazing to the pigs' inquisitive rootling - break up dominant vegetation and disturb the soil, triggering natural regeneration and creating a mosaic of habitats where wildflowers, insects and birds can flourish. For us, restoring these ancient interactions is a vital step in reversing nature's decline. By encouraging our native breeds and local wildlife to exhibit natural behaviours, we are actively helping to restore the balance of our local ecosystem, fostering a more resilient and biodiverse landscape for the future.
We are excited to see on the farm the wealth of local wildlife, big and small. There is no greater reward than seeing the electric blue of a Kingfisher. Its presence is a testament to the cleaner, more vibrant environment that we are working to enhance and protect. By working with nature, these habitats on the farm provide the perfect hunting grounds and nesting sites for a range of birds, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and fish.
